Disease caused by Parvo B19

1. Aplastic crisis in sickle cell patients (destroys erythroid precursors in BM)
2. Fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) with "slapped cheeks" rash
3. In pregnant women can cause hydrops fetalis and SAB

Slow virus infections (2)

1. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis - from measles
2. Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy from JC polyoma virus

SSPE

-Caused by persistent infection with altered measles virus (no M protein)
-Asymptomatic for several years, then neuro manifestations in childhood/teens
-Slowly progressive and usually fatal.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

-Cause is JC virus (polyoma)
-Infects oligodendrocytes causing demyelination
-Often assoc. with leukemia or lymphoma or with immunodeficiency
