Activity Series of Metals

a list of metals organised according to the ease whith which they lose electrons to form positive ions

Balanced equation

An equation for a chemical reaction in which the number of atoms for each element in the reaction and the total charge are the same for both the reactants and the products. In other words, the mass and the charge are balanced on both sides of the reaction.

Catalyst

A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being permantly consumed

chemical equation

a representation with symbols and formulas of the identities and relative amounts of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction

coefficient

a small whole number that appears in front of a formula in a chemical equation

Combination reaction

A chemical reaction in which two reactions combine to form a single product.

combustion reaction

a reaction in which a substance combines with oxygen, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of light and heat

decomposition reaction

a reaction in which a single compound produces two or more simpler substances

double replacement reaction

a reaction in which the ions of two compounds exchange places in an aqueous solution to form two new compounds

net ionic equation

an equation that includes only those compounds and ions that undergo a chemical change in a reaction in an aqueous solution

Single replacement reaction

a reaction in which one element replaces a similar element in a compound

skeleton equation

A skeleton equation is an equation that identifies the reactants and products in a chemical reaction by their chemical formula but does not quantify them.

spectator ion

an ion that does not take part in a chemical reaction and is found in solution both before and after the reaction

complete ionic equation

total ionic equation. Compare with net ionic equation.A balanced equation that describes a reaction occurring in solution, in which all strong electrolytes are written as dissociated ions.
