What is the definition of a gender?

The sociocultural and psychological dimensions of being male or female

What is a gender role?

A set of expectations that prescribes how females and males should think, act, and feel.

What is a social role theory?

States that gender differences result from the contrasting roles of females and males, with females having less power and status and control fewer resources than males.

What is the social cognitive theory of gender?

The view that emphasizes that children's and adolescents' gender development is influenced by observation and imitation of gender behavior, and by rewards and punishments they experience for gender-appropriate and gender-inappropriate behavior.

What is the cognitive theory of gender?

In this view, children's gender-typing occurs after they have developed a concept of gender. Once they begin to consistently conceive of themselves as male or female, children often organize their world on the basis of gender.

What is a gender schema theory?

According to this theory, an individual's attention and behavior are guided by an internal motivation to conform the gender-based sociocultural standards and stereotypes.

Talk that gives information, public speaking is an example.

What is androgyny?

The presence of a high degree of desirable feminine and masculine characteristics in the same individual. Ex: the androgynous individual might be a male who is both assertive and sensitive to others' feelings.

What are gender-role transcendence?

the belief that, when an individual's competence is at issue, it should be conceptualized not on the basis of masculinity, femininity, or androgyny but, rather, on a person basis. We should think of ourselves as people, not as masculine or feminine or androgynous

What is the gender intensification hypothesis?

This hypothesis states that psychological and behavioral differences between boys and girls become greater during early adolescent because of increased socialization pressure to conform to masculine and feminine gender roles

How does the media influence gender stereotypes?

- stereotype guys and girls
- girls are dumb blondes
- men are supposed to be macho
- culture- more individualistic, some families don’t have gender specific roles
- family/ past generations

When does a person realize what gender role he or she plays in a society?

in a classroom, if someone were to be the only boy, he will notice he stands out, as well as through their parents.
