What is a sexual script?

A stereotyped pattern of role prescriptions for how individuals should sexually behave. Females and males have been socialized to follow different sexual script.

What is sexual minority?

Someone who identifies with being a lesbian, gay or bisexual

What is a bisexual?

A person who is attracted to people of both sexes.

What role does the media play in sexuality? what has this changed in adolescents?

Women are seen as sex objects as well they endorse sexual stereotypes everywhere including in ads, in tv shows etc. This has a lot to do with younger adolescents engaging in sexual behavior

What are some concerns with early maturing females and engaging in early sex?

there is the concern that females are not emotionally prepared to have sex but think they are because they may be physically mature.

Compare and contrast male and female sexual scripts. How are their roles different?

Females are seen as "sluts" if they have multiple partners where as males are encouraged by their peers when they do the same thing. Boys are usually expected to act a certain way on dates including paying for the bill, picking up the girl as well and asking them on the date first. They are different because it seems that men are expected to be the providers and therefore act a certain way when going out on a date and women are expected to act a certain way too.

What are some factors that early sex is correlated with?

ineffective contraceptive use
- alcohol and drug use
- low academic achievement
- lower self-esteem
-deviant peers

What are some democratic factors that correlate with an adolescents early sexual experience?

low socio-economic status, family and peers. Not have a strong bond with parents can increase the risk of early sexual behavior as well as living and being raised in a "Bad" neighborhood and hanging around a with the wrong crowd that is generally older than the person.

What are some individual factors that correlate with engaging in early sexual behavior?

being an early maturer (in females) and as well having a weak impulse control in the brain.

What are some factors that prevent adolescents from engaging in sexual behavior?

-adult and peer role models that wait for sex until marriage.
- religious views as well help adolescents to "Wait" until they are married or the right time

What was it the Bailey and Zucker studied in adolescents?

They studied the relationship between childhood sex-typed behavior (behaved both masculine and feminine) and sexual orientation

What theory did Bailey and Zucker believe in?

Prenatal hormone theory- said that perinatal sex hormones in the brain influence sexual specific behavior.

What is found in the brain that is different in lesbians and gays?

They tend to have a smaller nuclei in the anterior hypothalamus.

What are problems sexual minority adolescents face?

discrimination among peers as well as not being accepted by their family which leads to a poor relationship with them which can then lead to depression and anxiety

Why is it that many people don't use affective contraceptive use?

It may have to do with low SES, engaging in sexual behavior at a young age, having poor coping skills, having a lack of future orientation.

What are some characteristics of rapists?

-Their aggression enhances their sense of power/masculinity
- angry at females generally
- want to hurt their victims

What is the primary source for teaching youth about sex health education?

Parents/ guardians.
