Psychologic Abuse |
Infliction of emotional/mental anguish by humiliation , coercian, and threats and/or lack of social stimulation. Examples include yelling, threats of harm, threats of withholding basic medical and/or personal care, and leaving the person alone for long periods |

Mandatory Reporting of Abuse |
A specified group of people (e.g. health care providers) is required by law to report abuse (of a specified nature against specified people) to a governmental agency (e.g. protective services, the police). |

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) |
Physical and/or sexual violence (use of physical force) or threat of such violence; also psychologic/emotional abuse and/or coercive tactics when there has been prior physical and/or sexual violence between spouses or nonmarital partners (boyfriend, girlfriend) or former spouses or nonmarital partners |

Elder Neglect (Physical) |
Physical harm (actual or potential) to person age 65 or older because of failure to provide for the person's well-being. Examples include inadequate feeding and hydration, unsanitary living conditions and poor personal hygiene |

Elder Abuse |
Willful infliction of force that results in bodily harm, pain, and/or impairment on a person age 65 or older. Examples include pushing, slapping, hitting, shaking, burning and rough handling |

Child Sexual Abuse |
Includes flondling a child's genitals, incest, penetration, rape, sodomy, indecent exposure, and commercial exploitation through prostitution or the production of pornographic materials |

Child Physical Abuse |
Physical injury due to punching, beating, kicking, biting, burning, shaking ot otherwise harming a child. Even if the parent or caretaker did not intend to harm the child, such acts are considered abuse when done purposefully |

Child Neglect |
Failure to provide ofr a child's basic needs (physical, educational, medical, and emotional) |

Child Emotional Abuse |
Any pattern of behavior that harms a child's emotional development or sense of self-worth. It includes frequent belittleing, rejection, threats and withholding of love and support |

Wound |
A general term referring to a bodily injury caused by physical means |

Traumatic alopecia |
Loss of hair from pulling and yanking or by other traumatic means |

Stab Wound |
A penetrating, sharp, cutting, injury that is deeper that it is wide |

Puncture |
The act of piercing or penetrating with a pointed object or instrument |

Petechiae |
Minute, pinpont, non-raised, perfectly round, purplish red spots cause by intradermal or submucous hemorrhage, which later turn blue or yellow |

Pattern of injuries |
Injuries, usually bruises and fractures, in various stages of healing |

Patterned Injury |
An injury caused by an object that leaves a distinct pattern on the skin and/or organ (i.e. being whipped with an extension cord) or any injury caused by a unique mechanism of injury (i.e. immersion burns to the hands or feet) |

Lesion |
A broad term referring to any pathologic or traumatic discontinuity of tissue or loss of function of a part |

Laceration |
The act of tearing or splitting; a wound produced by the tearing and/or splitting of body tissue, usually from the blunt impact over a bony surface |

Incision |
A cut or wound made by a sharp instrument; the act of cutting |

Hemorrhage |
The escape of blood from a ruptured vessel, which can be external, internal, and/or into the skin or other organ |

Hematoma |
A localized collection of extravasated blood, usually clotted on an organ, space or tissue |

Ecchymosis |
A hemorrhagic spot ot blotch, larger than petechiae, in the skin or mucous membrane, forming a non-elevated, rounded or regular, blue or purplish patch |

Contusion |
A bruise; injury to tissue without breakage of the skin; blood from broken blood vessels accumulates, producing pain, swelling, and tenderness |

Bruise |
Superficial discoloration due to hemorrhage into the tissue from ruptured blood vessels beneath the skin surface, without the skin itself being broken; also called a contusion |

Avulsion |
The tearing away of a structure or part |

Abrasion |
A wound caused by rubbing the skin or mucous membrane |
