List several ways the U.S was unprepared for war with England, thus making the first year of fighting a disaster.

It had few troops, and New England did not want to commit its troops; its navy was small and weak; it had little money and no good way of financing the war; its transporation and communication was weak; most of its military leaders were too old to direct the fighting.

List the three areas the British planned to invade in 1814. What was the purpose and the outcome of each?

They wanted to move from Montreal to New Yourk City to cut off New England and control New York, but they were unsuccessful. They wanted to attack the capital and other major cities in the East to conquer resistance in that region. They burned Washington, D.C., but they were defeated at Baltimore. They wanted to take New Orleans and possibly capture the Louisiana Territory, but they were unsuccessful.

What was unusual about the battle of New Orleans?

It took place after the Treaty of Ghent had ended the war.

The U.S gained respect in the eyes of other nations. Nationalism grew. New heroes emerged. Amemrican industry grew, creating more independence. European conflicts ended, and America was free from involvement in European affairs. The Federalist party was ruined, and the Republican party changed some of its views.
