the “great charter” of English liberties, forced from King John by the English barons and sealed at Runnymede, June 15, 1215.

Canon Law

The body of officially established rules governing the faith and practice of the members of a Christian church.

Machiavelli (Prince)

Italian political theorist whose book The Prince (1513) describes the achievement and maintenance of power by a determined ruler indifferent to moral considerations.

Serf

a person in a condition of servitude, required to render services to a lord, commonly attached to the lord's land and transferred with it from one owner to another.

Black Death

a form of bubonic plague that spread over Europe in the 14th century and killed an estimated quarter of the population.

a 16th century portrait painted in oil on a poplar panel by Leonardo Da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance.

Reformation

eligious revolution that took place in Western Europe in the 16th cent. It arose from objections to doctrines and practices in the medieval church (see Roman Catholic Church) and ultimately led to the freedom of dissent (see Protestantism).

Martin Luther

a German monk, theologian, university professor, Father of Protestantism, and church reformer whose ideas influenced the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization.

indulgences

is the full or partial remission of temporal punishment due for sins which have already been forgiven
